GURUDWARAS IN GURDASPUR

GURUDWARA DEHRA BABA NANAK : Batala

This town is situated on the left bank of river Ravi, on the Indo-Pak border. At Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district, Guru Nanak spent his last days of worldly life. Guru Nanak used to return to this side of the river daily for meditation. He also founded the city of Kartarpur on the right bank of the river. The importance of Kartarpur Gurudwara is that Guru Nanak left for his heavenly abode here at the age of seventy. Now this historical Gurudwara is in Pakistan territory, but it is visible to the naked eye from Dera Baba Nanak, where his devotees to perpetuate his memory constructed another Gurudwara. Maharaja Ranjit Singh provided copper guilded throne to the Gurudwara and also covered its canopy with marble. A Chola (cloak) said to have been worn by Guruji during his visit to Mecca and Madina is kept here.

GURUDWARA KANDH SAHIB : Batala

Batala city situated on the Amritsar-Pathankot railway line is a sub-divisional headquarters of Gurdaspur district of Punjab. Though it is a very important industrial town yet it is better known all over the world because Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh faith. He was married here to Bibi Sulakhni, daughter of Mul Chand Chauna. It is said Guru Nanak refused to be married according to the prevalent rites. As he was a reformer, he suggested a simpler wedding ceremony. The Brahmins resisted and Mul Chand Chauna, the would be father-in-law of the Guru, refused to marry his daughter to Nanak according to any other rites. He even threatened to send the wedding party back. On the other hand Bhandari family of Batala offered to marry their daughter to the Guru if Mul Chand broke his daughter's engagement to the bridegroom. A discussion took place between the Brahmins and Guru Nanak. Nanak was given a seat near a crooked decaying mud-wall, which was about to fall. The idea was to bury Nanak under the mud wall by giving it a little push. However an old lady informed Nanak who smiled and proclaimed, "This wall will not fall for centuries. The will of God shall prevail." Centuries have passed. The wall (Kandh) still stands intact shielded in glass, within Gurudwara Kandh Sahib. A gala celebration is held every year on the anniversary of Guru Nanak's marriage. A big procession is taken out to mark the occasion. According to records, the marriage party of Guru Nanak left Talwandi village (Nankana Sahib) now in Pakistan, for Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district of Punjab (India) and from there it went to Batala. There at Sultanpur his sister Bibi Nanaki and brother-in-law Jairam joined the marriage party. Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi sent his elephants and horses to add color to the marriage procession.

DARBAR SAHIB : DEHRA BABA NANAK

The Darbar Sahib, Dehra Baba Nanak is an old and significant building in Sikh architecture. It is the spot where the relics of Guru Nanak, the first Guru, were buried and a small shrine was erected here. Later, Dewan Chandu Lal a minister of the erstwhile Hyderabad State (Deccan), built the present building in bricks and lime. The upper portion including the dome (Gumbaz) was gold plated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1827 AD. Within the premises of this Gurudwara there is an old covered well, known as the well of Ajite Randhawa

DAMDAMA SAHIB - Sri Hargobindpur

In 1630, the Mughals had tried to confiscate by force the township called Sri Hargobindpur, established by Guru Arjun Dev in 1587. Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru, took objection to this action of the Mughal ruler. This brought him in conflict with the Mughal army. In this battle which was fought in 1630 AD it was misreported to Abdulla Khan, Subedar of Jalandhar, that Guru was constructing a fort at Sri Hargobindpur. Rattan Chand son of Gherer Chaudhry also incited him and Karam Chand son of Chandu Shah to attack the Guru. The Muslim commander, his two sons, and a large number of officers were killed and the remaining army ran away. At the site of this historic battle, now stands a magnificent shrine called Gurudwara Damdama Sahib. This town stands on the right bank of the river Beas in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. It was founded by Guru Hargobind and is now an important place of pilgrimage.

GURUDWARA TAHLI SAHIB

It is not known when exactly this building was erected first. It was a target of attack by the foreign invaders, along with the Golden Temple. The present structure of the monument has a nine storied form with a domicile superstructure. Although these nine floors are taken to be symbolic of nine years that Atal Rai had lived for the original construction probably did not have the present form. The Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandbak Committee, records 1778-1784 AD as the date of its erection. The monument of Baba Atal is the highest building in the city of Amritsar. It is 150 feet high and a fine panoramic view of the whole city may be had from the upper floor.
